Life At Bunyan Lodge
What is Bunyan Lodge like?
When you step through our doors, you'll immediately notice that Bunyan Lodge doesn't feel like a typical care facility. Our beautiful 3-floor Victorian building has been thoughtfully designed to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where your loved one can truly feel at home.

Personalised Living Spaces
Each of our 16 bedrooms can be completely personalised for your family member. We encourage residents to bring their own furniture, photographs, and cherished belongings - because we believe their room should reflect who they are, not where they live.
Whether they prefer a ground-floor room or enjoy a view from our upper floors, we work with you to find the perfect space.
Comfortable Communal Areas
Our spacious lounge provides a relaxing space for residents to socialise, watch television, or simply enjoy some quiet time.
The dining room, served through a convenient hatch from our kitchen, features four tables that seat four people each, creating an intimate, family-style dining experience. There's also a kitchenette where your loved one can help themselves to drinks whenever they wish.
Beautiful Garden Sanctuary
Step outside into our large back garden - a peaceful retreat that's partially paved for easy access and partially grassed for those who enjoy nature. We've created raised beds where residents can grow their own plants and vegetables, and our wooden gazebo provides a perfect spot for quiet reflection or social gatherings.

Safety and Accessibility
Throughout our three floors, we've ensured your loved one's safety and comfort with three shower rooms, one bathroom, and nine toilets strategically located for convenience. Every aspect of our home has been carefully designed with the well-being of our residents in mind.
Daily Life & Activities
Flexible Days Built Around Your Loved One
At Bunyan Lodge, having mental health needs doesn't mean giving up the freedom to choose how to spend your day. We've created a supportive structure that promotes independence while ensuring your family member always has engaging options available.
Community Connection
Your loved one will have regular access to the vibrant Bedford community. We organise trips to local attractions like the Norfolk Broads for peaceful boat trips, seaside excursions for fresh air and relaxation, and visits to fascinating places like Duxford Air Museum. These aren't just outings - they're opportunities for your family member to stay connected with the wider world.
Skill Development and Personal Growth
We offer gardening classes where residents can nurture plants in our raised beds, art classes to explore creativity, and computer classes to stay connected with family and friends. For those interested in fitness, we arrange access to leisure centres, swimming sessions, and gym workouts. We also support work-based skills training and return-to-work programs for residents who wish to explore these opportunities.

Social Activities and Entertainment
Our in-house activities create a warm, social atmosphere. We host BBQs in our garden gazebo, organise parties and celebrations, enjoy sing-along entertainers, and have regular games sessions, including board games, table football, and gaming consoles. We also arrange pub outings and shopping trips for those who enjoy these activities.
Personal Interests and Hobbies
Perhaps most importantly, we encourage your loved one to pursue their individual interests. Whether they enjoy reading, writing, painting, listening to music, playing bingo, or any other hobby, we provide the support and space they need to continue doing what they love.
Food & Dining

Fresh, Home-Cooked Meals Made With Care
Food is so much more than nutrition - it's comfort, pleasure, and a way to show we care. That's why we're proud of our 5-star food safety rating and our commitment to providing freshly prepared, delicious meals every day.
Flexible Dining That Respects Individual Preferences
We understand that your loved one may not always want to eat at traditional meal times. That's perfectly fine with us. While breakfast is generally served until 9:30 AM, we're happy to prepare it later if that's what your family member prefers. They can choose to eat in our welcoming dining room, in their own room for privacy, or even in the garden on pleasant days.
Nutritious, Balanced Meals
Our two qualified cooks, both holding Level 2 food safety certifications, prepare fresh, nutritious meals daily. We serve a cooked lunch, afternoon tea, a light evening meal, and provide bedtime drinks and snacks. Between meals, residents can help themselves to snacks, ice creams, and refreshments whenever they wish.
Special Dietary Requirements
We take special dietary needs seriously. Whether your loved one has allergies, cultural dietary requirements, or simply strong food preferences, we incorporate these into their individual care plan. Our cooks and care staff are fully informed about each resident's needs to ensure every meal is both safe and enjoyable.
Resident Input on Menus
Your family member's preferences matter to us. We discuss our menus with residents twice yearly and gather feedback through our satisfaction questionnaires. If they don't like what's on the menu on any particular day, we'll work with them to find an alternative they'll enjoy.
Location & Local Area

The Best of Bedford Right on Your Doorstep
We chose our Kimbolton Road location specifically because it offers your loved one the perfect balance of peaceful residential living and easy access to everything Bedford has to offer.
Walkable Community Living
Your family member will be just a 10-minute walk from Bedford's bustling town centre, the train station, and bus station. This means they can maintain their independence by accessing shops, services, and transport links whenever they choose. Bedford Park, with its beautiful green spaces and Robinson Swimming Pool, is also within easy walking distance.
Shopping and Amenities
Bedford offers excellent shopping opportunities, from the variety of high street stores to the Interchange Retail Park with major retailers like Boots, Next, TK Maxx, and Toys R Us. The weekly market in St Paul's Square every Wednesday and Saturday provides a traditional market town experience. For daily needs, there's a Budgens just a few doors away from us, plus major supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl, and Iceland.
Healthcare and Support Services
We're strategically located very close to the community mental health service and North Wing Hospital, ensuring your loved one has easy access to any additional healthcare support they may need. This proximity means continuity of care with familiar healthcare professionals.
Cultural and Social Opportunities
Bedford's rich cultural scene is easily accessible to our residents. The Bedford Museum, Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford Corn Exchange, Quarry Theatre, and The Place all host regular performances and exhibitions. The Park Pub & Kitchen is within walking distance for those who enjoy a traditional pub atmosphere.
Excellent Transport Links
Whether your family member wants to explore further afield or you're visiting from other areas, Bedford's excellent transport connections make everything accessible. The town is well-served by road, rail, and public transport, keeping your loved one connected to the wider world.
Families & Visitors

Your Involvement Matters to Us
We believe that family relationships are precious and should be nurtured, not disrupted by care arrangements. That's why we've designed our approach to actively encourage and support your ongoing involvement in your loved one's life.
Open Door Policy
You're welcome to visit whenever you wish. We don't believe in restrictive visiting hours because we understand that family time can't be scheduled. Whether you want to join your loved one for a meal, spend an afternoon in the garden, or simply have a quiet chat in their room, you'll always be welcomed warmly.
Active Participation in Care Planning
You know your family member better than anyone, and we value that knowledge. We actively encourage your participation in developing and reviewing their care plan. Your insights about their preferences, concerns, and aspirations help us provide truly personalised care that honours who they are as an individual.
Regular Communication and Updates
We believe in keeping you informed and involved. We'll establish the communication methods that work best for your family - whether that's regular phone calls, emails, or face-to-face meetings. You'll never be left wondering how your loved one is doing or what's happening in their daily life.
Support During Transition
We understand that moving into residential care can be an emotional time for the whole family. Our experienced team provides support not just for your loved one, but for you too. We're here to answer your questions, address your concerns, and help make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone.
Your Voice Matters
If you ever have concerns or suggestions, we want to hear them. You can speak directly with our manager or staff on duty, use our formal complaints procedure, or contact external bodies like the CQC or Bedford Borough safeguarding team. We also conduct annual satisfaction surveys because your feedback helps us continuously improve.
Maintaining Family Bonds
We actively support your family relationships by accommodating family celebrations, helping arrange special visits, and ensuring your loved one can participate in important family events whenever possible. Because at the end of the day, care is about preserving and nurturing the relationships that matter most.
